Making Friends in College: Tips for Building a Strong Campus Network

Jessica Rivera
Sophomore @ UCLA

Hey everyone! Navigating the social scene in college can be both exciting and intimidating. As a sophomore at UCLA, I’ve experienced the ups and downs of making friends and building a network on campus. Here are some tips that have helped me, and I hope they’ll help you too!

1. Get Involved in Campus Activities

One of the easiest ways to meet people is by joining clubs, organizations, or sports teams. Whether it’s a debate club, a dance team, or an environmental group, participating in campus activities allows you to connect with others who share your interests. Plus, it gives you a structured environment to meet new people and form friendships.

2. Attend Campus Events

Keep an eye out for events happening on campus. From concerts and movie nights to guest lectures and career fairs, these events are great opportunities to socialize. Don’t be afraid to go alone; you might meet someone who also decided to check it out solo.

3. Utilize Social Media and Apps

In today’s digital age, social media and apps can be powerful tools for making friends. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook have groups and pages dedicated to your university. Engage with these communities and don’t hesitate to reach out to people. Additionally, apps like College Souk can help you connect with fellow students. It has a friends-matching section where you can match with other students on campus ensuring you're connecting with genuine, like-minded peers.. The exclusivity to students makes it a safe and reliable option for making connections.

4. Participate in Study Groups

Study groups are not only great for academic success but also for making friends. Join or form a study group for your classes. It’s a fantastic way to bond over shared goals and support each other through the challenges of coursework.

5. Take Advantage of Dorm Life

Living in a dorm can be one of the most social aspects of college. Keep your door open when you’re around, and don’t be shy to start conversations in common areas. Organize or participate in dorm activities, and make an effort to get to know your neighbors.

6. Attend Orientation and Welcome Events

Orientation and welcome week events are specifically designed to help new students meet each other. Take advantage of these opportunities to introduce yourself to as many people as possible. Everyone is in the same boat, eager to make new friends.

7. Volunteer

Volunteering is a meaningful way to give back to the community while meeting like-minded individuals. Look for volunteer opportunities on campus or in the surrounding area. It’s a great way to develop friendships while doing something positive.

8. Be Open and Approachable

Sometimes, making friends is as simple as being open and approachable. Smile, make eye contact, and show genuine interest in others. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and start conversations with people around you.

9. Take Advantage of Class Interactions

Don’t just rush out of your classes. Take a moment to chat with the people sitting next to you before and after lectures. Study sessions, group projects, and class discussions are perfect opportunities to build connections.

10. Stay Consistent

Building a strong network takes time and effort. Be consistent in your efforts to meet people and nurture those friendships. Follow up with new acquaintances and show that you value the relationship.

Making friends in college doesn’t have to be daunting. By taking initiative and being open to new experiences, you can build a strong network of friends that will support you throughout your college journey. Good luck, and remember to check out the College Souk app to connect with fellow students and enhance your college experience!
